Your.Sounds.Tell.A.Story.
Hey there! I’m Shannon Barnes, MT-BC
You can call me Shan
I grew up in the small town of Morley, Michigan, where the quiet roads and endless woods were full of tiny sounds that sparked curiosity…birds’ calls, rustling leaves, creaking floors, and every little sound in-between. Those sounds taught me how to listen, how to find music in everyday life, and how to turn the world’s subtle sounds into stories of imagination.
Eventually, I made my way to Detroit, a city alive with sound. From the enticing sounds of Motown, Techno, Garage Rock, and Jazz…music venues, basement shows and the everyday hum of the streets of the Motor City. This beautiful city opened me to new sounds, new rhythms, and new, innovative collaborators whose creative sounds continue to shape my voice as an artist.
I’m a Board-Certified Music Therapist and private lesson instructor, teaching guitar, piano, ukulele, and voice. If you do Sounds with Shan, every lesson is a chance to explore sounds… your voice, your instrument, and the sounds you can create. We will discover sound through music theory, sound through rhythm, and sound through experimentation, turning each lesson into an adventure.
These days, you’ll find me teaching, performing, guiding music therapy sessions, soaking in city sounds, creating new sounds, and sharing the sound of connection. Music is sound, life is sound, and with every session, I hope to help you discover your own sound.
